Friends on a Journey

Friends on a Journey

What on earth is that class about?
My class started out as not a class. Many of my members had never attended Sunday school and weren’t sure they wanted to
or they went a long time ago and had not enjoyed the traditional class for adults. I started with food. I’m a southern girl and
that is how we do things. I cooked and they came. Of course dozens after dozens of invitation went out. Eventually we
progressed upstairs into a real classroom and a real class. My group started as a group in their 30s-70s; currently we have
members from 40s to 70s, so we don’t have a particular age group. We have several singles, widows, widowers, and
married, so we aren’t classified by those definitions. The key ingredient that we do share is a desire to learn. Everyone was
concerned about possibly having to read, pray, or share and all felt unable or unwilling to do that. We have lots of sharing in
our group but none is ever required or expected.
For a bunch of people who had little biblical knowledge and/or been out of church for years, this group decided to tackle
something easy for starters. We started with Revelation. I was more than hesitant. I had studied the bible for years but
never Revelation. That was the one topic that I was clueless about. I felt near panic. I argued with God, “Do I really have to
do this?” Of course the answer is obvious. We completed Revelation after nearly a year and have almost completed Daniel,
the old testament equivalent, and have studied Esther. We have not decided where we are headed next. If you aren’t sure
you fit anywhere, please stop in the 20-30 class, that’s what our sign says. I call it the “wishful thinking” class and someday
we will have a new sign that says Journey but for now that is our sign and where we are located. You probably pass us in the
hallway heading into church, stop in. We eagerly are searching for new people to travel on this journey with us. The more
the merrier.
